Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights statute that protects the rights of individuals with disabilities. It prohibits discrimination based on disability in any program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. This means that individuals with disabilities cannot be excluded from or denied the benefits of such programs. To be eligible for protections under Section 504, a person must have a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. This determination is typically made by a team of professionals familiar with the individual and the requirements of Section 504.
