SPECIAL EDUCATION

Washington County Schools Special Education Department utilizes a collaborative approach to support students' overall cognitive, physical, communication, social & emotional, and adaptive development through personalized instruction and related services in grades Pre-K to 12 (ages 3 - 22) and beyond. We set high expectations for all students throughout their educational journey while preparing them for post-secondary opportunities.

WCS Child Find & Guidebooks

Following Tennessee state law and Child Find obligations, WCS is committed to identifying, locating, and evaluating any student suspected of having a disability who may require specialized instruction, interventions, and related services.

Eligibility

The eligibility determination for special education services involves a two-step process. Once the evaluation is completed, the IEP team convenes to assess whether the results indicate that the student has one or more disabilities and if, as a result, the student requires special education services to progress within the general education curriculum. Disability categories and eligibility criteria are defined by both state and federal special education laws. Students must be reevaluated for eligibility every three years.
