We are implementing some changes regarding medical care in compliance with the Families' Rights and Responsibilities Act and Tenn. Code Ann. § 63-1-173(c)(1). The Families' Rights and Responsibilities Act was enacted in Tennessee to reinforce parental rights in directing their children's upbringing, education, and healthcare.
Due to this new law, we must obtain parental consent before providing medical care to students at school.

Please note that "medical care" is a broad term that includes more than just nursing services; it also extends to coaches, athletic trainers, or teachers providing a Band-Aid to a student.
While these guidelines will not significantly alter the way our school nurses care for students, nurses will still assess students to determine appropriate treatment but will need parental consent before providing that treatment. Certain actions do not require consent, such as taking vital signs, examining a sore throat or ear drainage, stabilizing an injured arm or leg, and responding to emergencies.
